How get audiences to take action.

Screen Shot 2013-06-24 at 06.59.54As some of you will know I have had a change of heart and a change of behaviour recently.

After a life time of not really bothering about what I ate (with the odd diet thrown in occasionally), not bothering how I exercised (or not) I have decided that nourishing my ‘insides’ and moving my ‘outsides’ is a great choice of behaviour and something I have committed to – big time. There were two triggers – approaching 50 next year and hurting my foot while training for a sponsored walk. I don’t want to be an unhealthy old person. And I want to be fit enough to do the things I want to, not sitting on the sidelines watching others get on with life!

I have embarked on a journey of thinking carefully of the foods I eat and viewing them in terms of what impact they will have on the way my body works rather than throwing temporarily ‘tasty’ food down my throat. I have slowly started moving more – dog walks, exercise, fitness groups. And something rather pleasant has been happening. I have more energy, I look better and I feel better…and almost as a side benefit, I am losing those pounds. Slowly slowly catchee monkey!

Why do I share this on a presentation skills blog? Well, the difference for me was seeing life from a different perspective. Intellectually I already knew that eating better and exercising was a ‘Good Thing’ to do. But I have only taken action because I shifted my perspective…only when the message resonated with me personally was I ready to do something about it.

And this is the same with our audiences: intellectually they may well understand what we are talking about. But it will take a real connection and a genuine resonance before your listeners will be ready to take action on what you are saying. When you are planning and choosing the words and phrases for your presentation you need to be thinking of how to make your message so compelling that suddenly they are prepared to shift their perspective – and take action.

    Brilliant Catherine, so pleased you heard a message that resonated with you and spurred you into action,
    There are 3 ways people take action to change:
    Consciously through determination and discipline
    Unconsciously through accessing their unconscious mind through a variety of techniques most well known being hypnosis and various other techniques

    And finally so many people wait for the “shock’ e.g. heart attack, diagnosed with diabetes etc etc before they take action. Arguably you have had a mini shock of approaching 50 and hurting your foot. Its great that, that was enough for you to take action.

    Primarily food is fuel we have just been programmed by mass marketing that its all about comfort, fun, enjoyment, treats or alternately “diets”, pills and shakes.

    We can can everything we need from good quality unprocessed foods you buy in most shops, unfortunately it is found in and amongst the 3 for 2 processed rubbish that entices most people into thinking they are getting a bargain.

    What we consume gives us energy, cognitive ability, improved sleep patterns and affects the levels of nasty hormones like adrenaline in our bodies.
    So if we put diesel in a petrol engine then we can’t think straight, we are irritable and snappy with our loved ones, we feel sluggish and very often we don’t like what we see in the mirror so it affects our self esteem and self confidence.

    Put the right fuel into our body and WOW as you have noticed we start to make better decisions, have better relationships, life is calmer and ultimately we feel good about ourselves.

        Yes we do get out and about Catherine more and more recently as I remember you once saying always ask yourself how often your on the delivering side of the fence rather than in the audience, so we try and hunt out opportunities to do that all the time, your name comes up consistently when we are out and about and you clearly do a fab job of helping people with their messages. I’m sure our paths will cross in person again soon, especially now u have connected with the importance of taking care of u, so then we can hear what u think of our delivery, our key message is: ‘if you don’t take the time to be well, you will eventually have to take the time to be ill’ so take care and see you soon x
