After a life time of not really bothering about what I ate (with the odd diet thrown in occasionally), not bothering how I exercised (or not) I have decided that nourishing my ‘insides’ and moving my ‘outsides’ is a great choice of behaviour and something I have committed to – big time. There were two triggers – approaching 50 next year and hurting my foot while training for a sponsored walk. I don’t want to be an unhealthy old person. And I want to be fit enough to do the things I want to, not sitting on the sidelines watching others get on with life!
I have embarked on a journey of thinking carefully of the foods I eat and viewing them in terms of what impact they will have on the way my body works rather than throwing temporarily ‘tasty’ food down my throat. I have slowly started moving more – dog walks, exercise, fitness groups. And something rather pleasant has been happening. I have more energy, I look better and I feel better…and almost as a side benefit, I am losing those pounds. Slowly slowly catchee monkey!
Why do I share this on a presentation skills blog? Well, the difference for me was seeing life from a different perspective. Intellectually I already knew that eating better and exercising was a ‘Good Thing’ to do. But I have only taken action because I shifted my perspective…only when the message resonated with me personally was I ready to do something about it.
And this is the same with our audiences: intellectually they may well understand what we are talking about. But it will take a real connection and a genuine resonance before your listeners will be ready to take action on what you are saying. When you are planning and choosing the words and phrases for your presentation you need to be thinking of how to make your message so compelling that suddenly they are prepared to shift their perspective – and take action.
