Here is my take on that old favourite Christmas Carol, ‘In the bleak midwinter’. With apologies to Christina Rosetti (1830-1894) who wrote the words and Gustav Holst ( 1874-1934) who wrote the music. And indeed anyone who loves poetry!
In the bleak presentation, frosty audiences made moan
Not another boring speech, another boring drone
Not another PowerPoint slide, another worn cliche
In the bleak presentation, who will save the day?
Our God, how long can this go on, til I can escape?
His voice is so monotone, her language so opaque
In the bleak presentation, a slide show must suffice
In place of passion and personality, oh what a waste!
Customers and colleagues may have gathered there
People who need to hear the message thronged the air
But his audience only, in their grim despair
Stopped listening at the first sentence
And started to stare
What can you do instead, nervous as you feel?
Focus on the audience needs, make it all sound real
Have a flowing structure which engages and imparts
Yet what you can you give them: give them your heart
